पतिव्रता धोबिन की कथापुराणों में वर्णन के अनुसार, बहुत पहले तुंगभद्रा नदी के किनारे करवा नामक धोबिन अपने पति के साथ रहती थी. करवा का पति काफी बुजुर्ग था और एक दिन नदी के किनारे कपड़े धोते समय एक मगरमच्छ ने उसे पकड़ लिया. धोबी घबराकर अपनी पत्नी को पुकारने लगा. धोबिन ने कच्चे धागे से मगरमच्छ को बांध दिया और यमराज से अपने पति की रक्षा की गुहार लगाने लगी. धोबिन की पुकार सुन यमराज कहते हैं कि मगरमच्छ की आयु अभी शेष है लेकिन तुम्हारे पति का समय आ गया है. इससे नाराज होकर करवा कहती है कि अगर आपने मेरे पति की रक्षा नहीं की तो मैं आपको श्राप दे दूंगी. इससे घबराकर यमराज (Yamraj) मगरमच्छ को यमपुरी भेज देते हैं और करवा का पति बच जाता है. इसके बाद कार्तिक कृष्ण पक्ष की चौथ को करवाचौथ मनाया जाने लगा.
साहुकार की बेटी की कथा
करवाचौथ से जुड़ी एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार, बहुत पहले एक साहूकार अपने सात बेटे और एक बेटी के साथ रहता था. सभी बेटे और बेटी का विवाह हो चुका था. सभी बहुओं और बेटी ने करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा था. रात के समय जब सभी लड़के भोजन करने बैठे तो उन्होंने बहन से भी भोजन कर लेने को कहा. बहन ने चांद के निकलने पर उसे अर्घ्य देने के बाद ही भोजन करने की बात बताई. भाई अपनी बहन से बेहद प्यार करते थे और बहन का भूख से व्याकुल चेहरा देख बेहद परेशान हो गए. भाईयों ने नगर के बाहर जाकर एक पेड़ पर चढ़कर आग जला दी. घर वापस आकर बहन से कहा, देखो चांद निकल आया है. अब तुम अर्घ्य देकर भोजन ग्रहणकर सकती हो.
बहन ने आग को चांद समझकर अर्घ्य देकर भोजन कर लिया. इससे करवाचौथ का व्रत भंग हो गया और भगवान गणेश लड़की से नाराज हो गए. गणेश जी की अप्रसन्नता के कारण उस लड़की का पति बीमार पड़ गया और घर में बचा हुआ सारा धन उसकी बीमारी में लग गया. लड़की को दोषों का पता लगा तो उसे पश्चाताप हुआ. उसने भगवान गणेश से क्षमा मांगी और विधि-विधान से करवा चौथ का व्रत शुरू कर दिया. यह देखकर गणपति बप्पा प्रसन्न हुए और उसके पति को जीवनदान दिया.
करवा चौथ व्रत तिथि और शुभ मुहूर्त
पंचांग के अनुसार, इस साल कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी तिथि 20 अक्टूबर दिन रविवार को सुबह 6 बजकर 46 मिनट से शुरू होगी और यह तिथि 21 अक्टूबर को सुबह 4 बजकर 16 मिनट तक रहेगी. ऐसे में उदया तिथि के मुताबिक, करवा चौथ का व्रत 20 अक्टूबर 2024, दिन रविवार को रखा जाएगा. करवा चौथ के दिन पूजा का शुभ मुहूर्त 20 अक्टूबर की शाम 5 बजकर 46 मिनट से लेकर शाम 7 बजकर 02 मिनट तक रहेगा. इस समय पूजा करना बहुत ही शुभ रहेगा.
करवा चौथ पर वीरवती की कथा
पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, कर्तिक वदी चतुर्थी को करवा चौथ करते हैं. इसमें गणेश जी का पूजन होता है. प्राचीन काल एक द्विज नामक ब्राह्मण के 7 पुत्र और एक वीरावती नाम की कन्या थी. वीरवती एक सुंदर और धर्मनिष्ठ राजकुमारी थी. वह अपने सात भाइयों की इकलौती बहन थी. विवाह के बाद, वीरवती ने पहली बार अपने पति की लंबी उम्र के लिए करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा. उसने दिनभर अन्न-जल ग्रहण नहीं किया और पूरी श्रद्धा के साथ व्रत का पालन किया. लेकिन दिन ढलते-ढलते भूख और प्यास के कारण वह अत्यधिक कमजोर हो गई. वीरवती की यह दशा देखकर उसके भाई चिंतित हो गए. वे अपनी बहन की हालत देखकर दुखी हो गए और उसे व्रत तोड़ने के लिए मनाने लगे, लेकिन वीरवती ने कहा कि जब तक चंद्रमा उदित नहीं होता, वह व्रत नहीं तोड़ेगी.
वीरवती के भाइयों ने अपनी बहन की हालत देखकर एक उपाय सोचा. उन्होंने पेड़ की आड़ में छल से एक दर्पण का उपयोग करके नकली चंद्रमा बना दिया. भाइयों ने वीरवती से कहा कि चंद्रमा निकल आया है और उसे देखकर व्रत तोड़ लो. वीरवती ने वह नकली चंद्रमा देखकर व्रत तोड़ दिया और जल ग्रहण कर लिया. जैसे ही उसने व्रत तोड़ा, उसे यह सूचना मिली कि उसका पति गंभीर रूप से बीमार हो गया है.
वीरवती को तुरंत आभास हुआ कि उसने चंद्रमा की पूजा किए बिना और सही समय से पहले व्रत तोड़ दिया, जिसके कारण यह अनहोनी हुई. वह अत्यधिक दुखी हुई और पश्चाताप करने लगी. अपने पति की लंबी आयु के लिए वीरवती ने दृढ़ संकल्प किया और पूरी श्रद्धा के साथ करवा चौथ का व्रत फिर से रखा. उसकी भक्ति और समर्पण से प्रसन्न होकर माता पार्वती ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया और उसका पति स्वस्थ हो गया.

However, no sooner had she eaten than she received the heartbreaking news that her husband, the king, had died. Devastated, Veeravati prayed to the goddess with immense sorrow and repentance. Moved by her devotion and guilt, the goddess granted her a boon to bring her husband back to life.
She was instructed to observe Karva Chauth fast with complete devotion once again, and this time, she did so without breaking it. Her husband’s life was restored, and they lived happily ever after.
